Itinerary

The Rongai Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is a hidden gem, offering trekkers a quieter and less crowded ascent from the northern side of the mountain. Spanning 6 to 7 days and covering approximately 72 kilometers (45 miles) round trip, this route provides a more tranquil and scenic journey compared to its southern counterparts.

Starting at the Rongai Gate (1,950 meters/6,398 feet), near the Kenya-Tanzania border, the trail winds its way through diverse landscapes, beginning with lush rainforest teeming with wildlife. As the ascent progresses, trekkers traverse open moorlands, where the panoramic vistas of Kilimanjaro's rugged terrain unfold.

The first night is typically spent at Simba Camp (2,625 meters/8,612 feet), nestled amidst the verdant surroundings. Continuing upward, the trail leads to higher altitudes, passing through Kikelewa Camp (3,600 meters/11,811 feet) and Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315 meters/14,160 feet). The latter offers stunning views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak, adding a sense of grandeur to the trek.

Crossing the lunar-like landscape of the Saddle, a high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, trekkers eventually reach Kibo Hut (4,703 meters/15,430 feet), the base camp for the final summit push. The ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters/19,341 feet) begins in the early hours of the morning, with a challenging climb to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, followed by a steady trek to the summit.

Descending via the Marangu Route, trekkers have the opportunity to witness Kilimanjaro's southern face and experience a different perspective of the mountain. The Rongai Route's gradual ascent profile, diverse scenery, and sense of solitude make it a popular choice for those seeking a more serene and varied Kilimanjaro adventure.
