The Machame Route, also known as the "Whiskey Route," is a popular and scenic path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Spanning 7 days and covering approximately 62 kilometers (38.5 miles) round trip, it offers a challenging yet rewarding trekking experience.
Starting at Machame Gate (1,640 meters/5,380 feet), the trail winds through lush rainforest before ascending steeply through the heath and moorland zones. Highlights include the Shira Plateau and the iconic Barranco Wall, offering stunning views along the way.
The route passes through various campsites, including Machame Camp, Shira Camp, and Barranco Camp, allowing for gradual acclimatization. The final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters/19,341 feet) begins from Barafu Camp (4,673 meters/15,331 feet) in the early hours of the morning, culminating in a challenging climb to the summit.
After reaching the summit, trekkers descend via the Mweka Route, passing through lush rainforest once again before reaching Mweka Gate (1,640 meters/5,380 feet). With its stunning scenery and challenging terrain, the Machame Route offers an unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
