The Shira Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is celebrated for its stunning vistas and less crowded trails. Lasting 7 days and covering around 56 kilometers (35 miles) round trip, it offers a unique starting point at a higher altitude, providing trekkers with immediate panoramic views.
Beginning at Shira Gate (3,048 meters/10,000 feet), the route ascends through the Shira Plateau, characterized by sparse vegetation and otherworldly landscapes. Trekkers spend their first night at Shira Camp (3,840 meters/12,600 feet) before joining the main trail at the convergence with the Machame Route.
After passing through Barranco Camp (3,950 meters/12,960 feet), where the iconic Barranco Wall provides breathtaking views, trekkers ascend to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters/15,331 feet), the final base camp before the summit push.
Following the summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters/19,341 feet), trekkers descend via the Mweka Route, passing through lush rainforest before reaching Mweka Gate (1,640 meters/5,380 feet), completing the journey.
